چکیده

We study the evolution of globular cluster systems (GCS) in elliptical galaxies and explore the dependence of their main properties on the mass and the size of the host galaxy. We have focussed our attention on the evolution of the GCS mass function (GCMF), on the fraction of surviving clusters and on the ratio of the final to initial total mass in clusters; the dependence of these GCS properties on the structure of the host galaxy as well as their variation with the galactocentric distance inside individual host galaxies has been thoroughly investigated. We have adopted a log-normal initial GCMF with mean mass and dispersion (log M i = 5.25 and σ i = 0.6) similar to those observed in the external regions of elliptical galaxies where memory of initial conditions is likely to be well preserved. After a survey over a large number of different host galaxies we have restricted our attention to a sample of galaxies with effective masses, M e , and radii, R e , equal to those observed for dwarf, normal and giant ellipticals. We show that, in spite of large differences in the fraction of surviving clusters, the final mean masses, log M f , of the GCMF in massive galaxies (log M e > ∼ 10.5) are very similar to each other (log M f ≃ 5.16, M V = −7.3 assuming M/L V = 2) with a small galaxy-to-galaxy dispersion; low-mass compact galaxies tend to have smaller values of log M f and a larger galaxy-to-galaxy dispersion. These findings are in agreement with those of recent observational analyses. The fraction of surviving clusters, N f /N i , increases with the mass of the host galaxy ranging from N f /N i ∼ 0.9 for the most massive galaxies to N f /N i ∼ 0.1 for dwarf galaxies. We show that a small difference between the initial and the final mean mass and dispersion of the GCMF and the lack of a significant radial dependence of log M f inside individual galaxies do not necessarily imply that evolutionary processes have been unimportant in the evolution of the initial population of clusters. For giant galaxies most disruption occurs within the effective radius while for low-mass galaxies a significant disruption of clusters takes place also at larger galactocentric distances. The dependence of the results obtained on the initial mean mass of the GCMF …

Evolution of globular cluster systems in elliptical galaxies . II : power - law initial mass function

We have studied the evolution of globular cluster systems (GCS) in elliptical galaxies with a power-law initial GCS mass function (GCMF) (f (M) ∝ M −α) similar to that predicted by some theoretical studies of globular clusters formation and to that of young cluster systems observed in merging galaxies. We have carried out a survey over a large number of different host galaxies and we have consi...

Formation of Globular Clusters in Galaxy Mergers

We present a high-resolution simulation of globular cluster formation in a galaxy merger. For the first time in such a simulation, individual star clusters are directly identified and followed on their orbits. We quantitatively compare star formation in the merger to that in the unperturbed galaxies. The merging galaxies show a strong starburst, in sharp contrast to their isolated progenitors. ...

Formation Scenarios for Globular Clusters and Their Host Galaxies

This review focuses on how galaxies and their globular cluster systems form. I first discuss the now fairly convincing evidence that some globular clusters form in galaxy starbursts/mergers. One way these observations are valuable is they place important constraints on the physics of the formation of globular clusters. Moreover, it is natural to associate the typically metal-rich clusters formi...

On the Evolution of the Galactic Globular Cluster System

By means of a semi-analytical method allowing us to follow the evolution of individual globular clusters spanning a large set of different initial conditions we address the issue of the origin of some observational properties of the galactic globular cluster system. After a preliminary study of some general properties of the main evolutionary processes by a discussion of the relevant timescales...

Discovery of Globular Clusters in the Proto-spiral Ngc 2915: Implications for Hierarchical Galaxy Evolution

We have discovered three globular clusters beyond the Holmberg radius in Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys images of the gas-rich dark matter dominated blue compact dwarf galaxy NGC 2915. The clusters, all of which start to resolve into stars, have MV 606 = −8.9 to –9.8 mag, significantly brighter than the peak of the luminosity function of Milky Way globular clusters. Their co...
